A Change for the Better

Dear Fellow Liberians,

For almost 3 weeks our website was down and the administration cares less to empathize with us the unbearable situation we went through without the site. There was neither a warning on the site nor any email notification informing us that the site was under construction. We were not informed at the general meeting that a project to overhaul the site was in progress. This is not the state of affairs of the Liberian Association of Indiana we envisioned from the rhetoric of the campaign. We did not imagine moving from better to worse. This emerging pattern is troubling.

Over the past two years we enjoyed better information dissemination according to our President and I agree with him. This is how he puts it. “During the past two years our community saw improvement in our record system, information dissemination, relationship with other local organizations among others”. Can this be the new beginning he promised us? I am not sure. I am also not sure if the President believes in all those good things he tells us.

Therefore, I think the question (Are we going to conduct this community in a fashion of recitation where one go and memorize poems and come to programs to recite?) posted by brother Sylvanus D. Paelay needs to be answered. I think we need a clarification because this administration is craftier in saying excellent things that they are not committed to do. It has the propensity of shoving us to the brink, forcing us to wonder if the administration's manner of conducting the affairs of the Community will be by means of mere recitation of poems.

My consideration is profoundly ingrained by the analytical observation of the leadership's direction exhibited since the emergence of this administration. Let me with emphases inject that, I stand to be corrected with objectivity. I am also open to honestly debate my enumerated observations:
1. The President conceded in his inaugural address that his victory in the election was the remarkable expression of our confidence in him. Yes indeed we were confident that he was the only one in the race that could deliver on his promise of participatory democracy. Yes we were confident that he could put an end to the so-called "THREE MAN RULE" and involve everyone regardless of you educational level or creed. On October 25th 2009 the President-Elect made his first appearance before us (the Assembly). In that meeting he circulated a flyer informing the Assembly of the date, time, and venue of the inaugural program and ball. My question then is, who did he discuss this program with when in fact, that was our first time meeting after the election? Are we then recoiling from the so-called "THREE MAN RULE" to a "ONE MAN RULE"? Or is he discussing these matters only with his ardent campaign supporters and only considering them to be the Assembly?

2. I have observed wholeheartedly that this administration is completely taking away the power of the Assembly while eluding the constitution in order to elevate themselves to be the gods of the organization. In the December 12, 2009 meeting, the President told us that the outgoing administration refused to disburse funds for the inaugural program. Therefore he unilaterally decided to commit the organization in crediting money without following the due process. I wondered what was his justification? Did he consider that as an emergency? If that was an emergency, was he inaugurated at the time when the decision was taken? If not, in which authoritative capacity was he operating? If he was not the one,who then committed the organization to credit money? If he was the one, what then is his charge? I am only threading the needle to adjudicate my assertions. The President again reported on activities that happened before he was given the gavel. In his report, he told us that they operated at a deficit of $638 and made $1,925 gate intake. My question then is, where is the $1,925 gate intake? A unilateral decision was taken again to pay back the money credited. By whom? By the legitimately elected and inaugurated President? Did he inform the Assembly before taking this decision? No. He considered that to be another emergency. It appears as if the people they credited the money from threaten them with law suit so they could not wait for a meeting to ask the Assembly. Even the balance $638, he told us he was going to take that money from the Association’s account. He didn’t ask the Assembly. Why? Because he is the boss. He knows what is good for the organization therefore, following the due process is a waste of time. I wish President Obama would have used this kind of authority given the unemployment situation in the country. Take the TART money without working with Congress to create more jobs for us-the unemployed. President Dennis was well aware of the Inaugural budget at the October meeting, but failed to inform the Assembly. We could have discussed it right there. Surely someone in the Assembly could have enlightened us or have an idea that could have avoided some of the poor planning that was later described to us as "Unforeseen Expenses". Security, Liquor policy of a hotel, luncheon for the ambassador, etc. -- how can these things be unforeseen?

3. “The time has come for us to embrace one another and work together. We must stimulate ourselves in the direction of getting things done for our community. Let us create together a new community spirit of unity and trust. Let us learn to lean on one another. Your strength can compensate for my weakness, and your wisdom can minimize my mistakes. Our leadership has abiding faith and confidence in our community that if we pull our resources and redirect our approach, we can definitely make a vibrant community”.These are lines from the President's inaugural speech that I am finding difficult to reconcile with his actions. You will agree with me that, one who says let go leads the road. Brother Sylvanus D. Paelay was recommended by some prominent community figures to be a webmaster. Not only that, the brother wrote and cited two important references to authenticate his qualification for this post but, our President refused to appoint him to this position. He decided to give the position to an outsider. I mean to someone outside the state of Indiana and a non-member. In this scenario, where is the idea of leaning on one another? How can we reconcile this action with the President telling us that his leadership has abiding faith and confidence in our community? Can someone help me here? Where is the idea of us creating together, a new community spirit of unity and trust?

I think we need to be treated better than this Mr. President. Please change this trajectory. Let 2010 be the year in which we will begin to see the quintessence of the NEW BEGINNIG you promised us. Remember! In union strong sucess is sure.

Thanks
